Help Teachers

Clark Howard
November 20, 2003

I talked recently about the unfortunate fact that many teachers buy their own school supplies because school districts have not budgeted money for these items. The average teacher now spends almost $600 of his or her pay to buy supplies for students and classrooms, according to a recent study. But you can do something in the meantime to help these struggling educators. A listener recently informed me about a Web site, www.iloveschools.com, that matches donated items with teachers who need them.

Teachers go to the site and register their school and the supplies they need. Donors who have items to offer search the site for schools and teachers in need of those items and then they choose a school. The site matches the teacher with the donor, and the swap is made.
