KVEW News Story Script
Aired: 08/05/04
KEVIN SHAUB: For years teachers have had to spend their own money
to buy supplies for their classrooms. But, that could soon change.
KVEW'S Adam Michaels joins us now with more. Adam?
ADAM MICHAELS: Joe Lloyd knows all too well about shortfalls in
the school budget. He's the principal at Kiona-Benton City Elementary.
JOE LLOYD: Oh...it's getting greater every year. We are such a
small school District and our funds are kind of limited so, ah,
supplies like computer equipment...those things are few and far
between.
ADAM MICHAELS: Lloyd says it's not uncommon for teachers to pony
up five hundred dollars or more to buy needed supplies. But last
June I Love Schools, Inc. was developed by a firm in San Diego.
Teachers can go on the site and list needed supplies...and then
others can go on...see what's needed...and donate.
JOE LLOYD: I posted a few of the things we could use at the school...thought
it couldn't hurt...who knows.
ADAM MICHAELS: Items Lloyd needs include pens, toys, computers,
and notebooks. Other teachers need Kleenex, paper, crayons...you
name it. And one of the best things about the site...it's great
for the environment.
GAIL EVERETT: I like that it's a way to reuse instead of tossing,
and saves natural resources from creating new ones, and it just
makes sense.
ADAM MICHAELS: Gail Everett is the Environmental Education Coordinator
for the city of Richland. She's excited that people are beginning
to think outside the box.
ADAM MICHAELS: So far Lloyd hasn't gotten anything on his wish
list...but that's okay he says.
JOE LLOYD: So far...nothing...but that's ok...I'm patient.
BACK TO KEVIN...
KEVIN SHAUB: If you are a teacher and would like to list your
needs...OR you'd like to see if you can help...visit the website
